The Alliance Française, founded in Paris 140 years ago, opened its doors on 17 October 1957, in Suriname, and quickly became a major institution within Surinamese society. Thanks to thorough and immersive learning, this institution played a central role in the learning of French in the country, for more than 60 years. Today, many former students remember the cultural and culinary events which, in addition to the courses, contributed to the influence of the French language and culture in Suriname: French Cinema, French Music; French food; French art exhibitions, French-themed events and language- and culture trips attracted people of all age groups and from all social and cultural backgrounds. Unfortunately, from the end of 2020 there was no active Alliance Française in Suriname.
The Alliance Française is now back, and we hereby invite you to become a member of the [NEW] Alliance Française Suriname (AFS), reopened at Letitia Vriesdelaan #14 and #16 in Paramaribo.
From “Basic French in 10 easy lessons,” to intensive French language classes, at different levels; simple French for kids from 6 to 14 years old; conversation classes, and learning French while singing for more advanced French speakers; French movies; discussions and presentations in French; French culinary activities; special events such as ‘Fête de la Musique;’ our real French Bistro ‘Le Quatorze, and soon:
specially organized French language-and-culture trips to French speaking territories, and… shopping. These are all things you can expect from the Alliance Française Suriname.
Membership of the Alliance Française Suriname has many advantages, such as a discount on all Level A and Level B courses; free book borrowing at our ‘Antoine Joly Library;’ access to French movies and documentaries; the ‘AFS Bulletin d’Information;’ first come first serve offers and invitations to events;
special benefits at Bistro Le Quartorze, include a number of free glasses of wine per year. As a member you have the right to participate in the election of the AFS Board. The standard annual fee is €40, or its equivalent in SRD or USD. In the online application form, there are more membership options.
